In the late 1980s, Cessna proposed to manufacture a truly lightweight, low-cost business jet intended for single-pilot operation. Cessna unveiled the CE-525 CitationJet in October 1989 at the annual NBAA show. The new model 525 represented a dramatic evolution in the lineage of the Citation. It featured a low-drag natural laminar-flow wing, a T-tail and the Williams Roll-Royce FJ44-1A turbofan engine. The CJ1 cabin has four well-appointed facing club recliner seats and a fifth side-facing seat aft of the co-pilot seat. A refreshment cabinet is aft of the pilot and in the rear of the cabin is a coat closet on the left side and a non-flushing toilet with a privacy curtain on the opposite sidewall. There are two external baggage compartments, a small one in the nose and a larger 30.2 cu ft aft compartment.
