The Citation Excel design is based on a combination of an extended Citation Ultra wing with a shortened Citation X fuselage. It is intended to fill a niche for a mid-size, short - to medium-range business jet with a stand-up cabin and low operating costs. FAA certification for the Excel was granted in April 1998, by which time Cessna had already secured more than 200 orders for the plane, including an order from Executive Jet Aviation for 50 Excels. The Citation Excel's standard cabin configuration accommodates eight passengers in a double club arrangement, but can be configured to hold up to eleven passengers. The Citation Excel is powered by two Pratt & Whitney of Canada PW545A high bypass, axial flow turbofans, rated at 3,804lbs. of thrust each at ISA +13 C. Inspection interval on the engines is 5,000 hours.
